What's going on in class - September 2017

Students listening to music to find examples of literary devices.
Our school year is off to such a great start!  The students are working hard and seem engaged in the activities they've experienced so far.  We've been reviewing literary devices such as allusion and flashback.  We're also going a bit deeper by learning about the three types of irony-dramatic, situational and verbal.  Video clips are a great way to show examples of these.

"The Landlady" by Roald Dahl, "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry have been read so far.  To come is our theme of "Perception vs. Reality" where we'll read stories by Poe as well as look at some current advertising campaigns.  Ask your student about "The Landlady"-quite a plot twist!  We had some great discussions about it and even found a real life example!

It was nice meeting so many of you at Open House.  When you have time, please share your words of wisdom to our Shepard 8th graders for their last year. Flipgrid click here  The kids are so excited to hear your messages!
